Strategy

The BBCT set a brief to create and design a game to be located at the back of a Junior Member subscription magazine. The challenge was to create a physical game to fit into an A5 envelope, that looked at educating or simply entertaining the audience.

My response to tackling this brief was to look into creating and developing a game that would both educate and entertain the Trust's desired audience of 7 to 11 year olds. I did some research around bumblebees and found that all bumblebees are split into two groups when it comes to tongue length. One group possesses short tongues whilst the other have long tongues. Short-tongued bumblebees can pollenate short petalled flowers (like Daisy's) whilst long-tongued bumblebees can pollenate longer petalled flowers (like Lavender).

I created a physical game based on this information where players would choose to either be a long-tongued or short-tongued bumblebee. This would be showcased with players putting on a provided headband that represents this. Then the short-tongued team would hide Lavender pollen pieces for the long-tongued team to find whilst the long-tongued would hide the Daisy Pollen pieces for the short-tongued team to find. Each team would then take these pollen pieces back to their own nest and flip over the pieces to reveal a nest design on the other side of the piece. Then they would place these nest pieces into their nest. The team to complete their nest first wins.

The aim for this game was to both educate and entertain the audience.
